The Cultural Interpreting Framework.

A five-stage method for reading a culturally complex situation accurately and turning that reading into a decision you can record and defend. It sits underneath every workshop, standard and tool we build.

Five stages, one decision.

Developed across twenty-five years of frontline practice in healthcare, policing, higher education and faith settings.

  1. NoticeRecognise when culture, faith or community context may be shaping the situation, including what goes unsaid.
  2. ConsiderWeigh what it could mean for this person, asking rather than assuming from group identity.
  3. TranslateTurn that understanding into options the organisation can act on within its duties.
  4. AlignCheck the chosen option against law, policy, safeguarding and professional standards.
  5. RecordDocument the reasoning so the decision can be reviewed, explained and defended.
What this means for you

Two practitioners facing the same situation reach consistent, explainable decisions, and your organisation holds a record of how culture and faith were considered.

Where the framework shows up.

In workshops

Every scenario is worked through the five stages, so teams leave with a method rather than a list of facts.

In standards

IPGS and our other standards apply the framework to specific risks and duties.

In tools

Decision toolkits and recording templates carry the stages into daily practice.

Questions we are asked

What is the Cultural Interpreting Framework?

A five-stage method, Notice, Consider, Translate, Align and Record, that helps practitioners read a culturally complex situation accurately and reach a decision they can record and defend.

Is this language interpreting?

The framework is about interpreting meaning and context. For language, use a professional interpreter; the framework helps staff read what sits around the words.

How do teams learn it?

Through workshops built from their own services, and then through tools and recording templates they use in practice.
